Research WORKSHOPS Demonstrations

The NARC - National Arc fault Research Center is part of the Institute of Electrical Power Systems and High Voltage Engineering of the Technischen Universität Dresden

About the Chair of Electrical Power Systems

The Center

The National Arc fault Research Center (NARC) which belongs to the Technischen Universität Dresden concerns about the examination of high current serial and parallel fault arcs in electrical low voltage grid in projects with partners from the industry as well as from sciences.

Hazard due to fault arcs

If a fault arc ignites in a high power electrical system there is a high harzard potential for the electrical system involed but also for the personnel. As a result the involed equiptment gets destroyed and in this case the power blackout of the electrical energy supply is the consequence.

The reasons for the appearance of fault arcs reaches from a incorrect rating of the electrical equipment up to animals reaching in the electrical system. But, one of the main reasons are wrong or unwarily done maintenance and operating work.

A look at our daily business

The examination of the ignition phase

To ignite the fault arc a thin copper wire is short-circuiting the electrodes

To place in a low-voltage high-breaking-capacity fuse

Experiments wirh fuses that show diffrent typs of time behaviour

Flying firebrands from a fault arc

Wissensvermittlung

Wir halten Fachvorträge zum spannenden Thema der Lichtbögen

Measurement technology

The measurement of current and voltage with a high sample rate

Preparation is everything

Even if our test bench is placed outside wind and wether do not affect the workshop
